The newly-appointed United Nations envoy to Iraq, Martin Kobler, was today received by the country's Prime Minister, Nuri Al-Maliki, saying he looked forward to greater cooperation and coordination with Iraqi authorities to assist them in consolidating achievements made so far.
Mr. Kobler, the Secretary-General's Special Representative for Iraq and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), also expressed his gratitude to Mr. Al-Maliki for the valuable assistance and support provided to mission and the entire UN team in Iraq.
He stressed that UNAMI and the UN country team are in Iraq to assist the Government and the people.
Meanwhile, the UN the World Food Programme (WFP) in Iraq today marked World Food Day by highlighting the vital role that food assistance plays during humanitarian crises, supporting recovery, and building the resilience that is necessary to ensure food security.
"Today on World
Food Day, we celebrate our close cooperation with the Government of Iraq in improving social protection for vulnerable groups at risk of food insecurity," said Edward Kallon, the WFP Country Director.
"While the food security situation in Iraq has been improving, it is important to remember that there are still close-to a million people in need of food assistance, which is why WFP is working closely with the Iraqi Government to ensure that these people are provided for."
Starting last year, WFP Iraq has launched a two-year relief and recovery operation to address the needs of vulnerable groups and build the capacity of the Iraqi Government at the institutional and local level to design and implement effective safety net programmes, including the school feeding scheme, maternal and child health and nutrition and cash-for-work programmes.
